Fundamental Alterations…
Attaching Revelate Design Feedbags
The Nuisance
I left the steer crown of my fork long so that I could raise my stem higher, allowing for an upright riding position. I also have my Quad Lock phone mount set so my phone is positioned above the stem. This combination does not allow the stem strap of my feedbags to stay fastened to my stem.
The Alteration
I drilled a hole in an alloy headset spacer and threaded it for a 5mm bolt. Then I made slotted bracket that I could bolt onto the spacer.
Modifying Salsa Anything Cages
Reason For Modification
We are attaching four Salsa Anything cages to our forks, two on each side. The Anything Cage has three bolt holes to attach it to the fork. Threading a strap through the cage to securely attach anything requires two slots on each side of the bolt. This is not an issue when only one cage is attached to the fork because you can run the strap around the fork. However, when two cages are side by side this is not possible. The single slot above the double slot had to be modified to be a double slot.
Sounds confusing I know, especially considering my vocabulary useless to explain it properly so you will have to look at the photos for clarification.
The Alteration
With moldable plastic I bonded a narrow piece horizontally in the center of the single slot to convert it into a double slot.
Beyond the alteration I also had to repair three of the Anything Cages. The EXP plastic, even though it is enhanced with glass-filled nylon, is not as strong and durable as it could be. The corner of the lower shelf needs a little strengthening to handle impact from trail obstacles. Corners on three of our cages cracked.
I drilled a 1/16” hole on each side of the crack and used a paper clip to wire the crack closed. Then I used moldable plastic to bond everything together.
Orlieb Handlebar Pack QR
The Design Limitation
The Ortlieb handlebar bags are not designed to work with handlebars like Jones Bars or the Surly Mokolo. Luckily the Surly Mokolo is a steel handlebar so I was able to modify it attach my Ortlieb Handlebar Pack. Which means I voided my warranty on the Mokolo bar.
The Alteration
For this project I used
1-1/4” PVC pipe cap
6mm x 60mm bolt
6mm nylock nut
6mm washers
1/2” copper pipe coupler.
After cutting a rounded slot in the PVC pipe cap that fit the diameter of the outer tube of the handlebar, I drilled a 1/4” hole in the center. Then I drilled a 1/4” hole centered on the Mokolo’s outer tube.
I cut the copper pipe coupler in half, lengthwise and drill a 1/4” hole in the center. This is used as washer that will stregthen the area of the handlebar that the bolt will go through.
After bolting this all together the PVC cap is used in place of the stem to mount the handlebar bag. I have been using it for over a year and it works great!
