Setting The Stage…

I have a lot of stoves, to the point of addiction. I just like a well thought out piece of camping gear so my closets are full of outdoor gear that was used then replaced with the latest trends. I have always been a collector camping gear. When it came time to plan our bikepacking lifestyle, all this collecting would pay off.

Our current stove would work well enough if we planned on eating like we do on distance backpacking. It is compact, weighs only 14 ounces for the entire kit with fuel, and also can burn wood. While many may be capable of producing gourmet meals from a denatured alcohol stove without flame control, I can not. My mind was made up to find a stove that is capable of much more than just boiling water.

In the early 80’s my backpack was stolen. In it was a Trangia stove that I really liked but replaced it with Optimus 111 Hiker. I never really thought much more about that Trangia stove until recently. Turns out it made more of an impression on me than I took the time to realize.

Why We Chose The Trangia 27-3 UL/HA

This was a tough decision between the Esbit and Trangia. Both offer great products and my final choice was based on the experience I have had with Trangia in the past. I also like the fact that the pots fit inside the windscreen with the Trangia, this makes using alcohol much more efficient both in heat and fuel consumption.

We also wanted a system that would allow us to cook fresh food and having all the benefits of our home kitchen.

  • Uses denatured alcohol.

  • Can be fitted to use any fuel type. Canister, White Gas, Kerosene, Diesel, etc.

  • Functional cookware:

    • Heats evenly

    • Cleans easily

    • Skillet actually works.

    • Bowls can work as double boiler.

  • Packable.

  • I like using it.

My Negatives…

Here is a list of where this product could could either be improved upon, didn’t meet our expectations, or is a little voice in my head that I think about when using it.

  • Multi-Fuel accessory is ridiculously expensive.

  • Not much can be done about it, but it is bulky.

  • I want to say heavy but that wouldn’t be fair because the comparison is based on lighter stoves not in the same class as the Trangia 27-3 HA. It is heavier than the Esbit however.

  • Surprised to discover how difficult it was finding denatured alcohol or mineral spirits.
